Development Associate (Fundraising)

SOME (So Others Might Eat) provides material aid and comfort to our vulnerable neighbors in Washington, DC, helping them break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through programs and services that save lives, improve lives, and help transform the lives of individuals and families, their communities, and the systems and structures that affect them.

Our more than 30 programs throughout the district provide comprehensive services that lead to mental and physical health, continued sobriety, job training, living-wage employment, and affordable housing. We meet immediate needs with food, clothing, and healthcare, and offer the tools one needs to live with hope, dignity, and greater independence.

Position Description: The Development Associate provides essential administrative support across SOME's Development and Communications department, reporting to the VP, Development Operations. This role serves as a primary point of contact for the SOME general inbox and development phone line, processes incoming gifts and donor correspondence, and provides financial administration support, including department invoicing and expense reconciliation.

The Development Associate also supports donor acknowledgment, special events invoicing, SharePoint and systems organization, and cross-team administrative projects, playing a central role in keeping the department's daily operations running smoothly.

Compensation: We offer our employees a competitive compensation and benefits package that reflects our organizational culture, mission, and core values. The hourly range for this position is $27.04 .00 to $28.63 and may be commensurate with experience.

Required: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. 2 years of experience in nonprofit development operations, fundraising support, or related administrative roles. Demonstrated experience working with donor databases/CRMs and reporting tools.

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. 2-4 years of experience in nonprofit development operations, fundraising support, or related administrative roles. Demonstrated experience working with donor databases/CRMs and reporting tools, specifically Salesforce and GoFundMePro/Classy platforms.

Required License/Certification: N/A

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (40 hours per week); Hybrid Schedule (4 days in office/week & 1 telework day after 90-day introductory period)

Expected Contributions: Fundraising

  • Monitor transactions in GoFundMePro in an effort to reconcile failed transactions: daily, monthly, and/or recurring sustainers.
  • Prepare and manage donor research profiles for internal donor briefs with gift officers & executive staff.
  • Contribute to and review written materials, including individual donor strategies, briefings, and acknowledgments in a quality consistent with SOME’s development communication standards.
  • Collaborate with development team members on communications and engagement efforts of donors.
  • Responsible for supporting special events invoicing processes, including coordinating vendor billing and ensuring accurate and timely invoice management.

Communication & Cross-Team Coordination

  • Draft and coordinate donor-facing correspondence including acknowledgments, invitations, and stewardship materials.
  • Serve as liaison between development and other internal departments to support shared goals and effective information flow.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for general Development and Communications emails that have been forwarded from other departments/teams across SOME.
  • Manage and field all requests that come through the Monetary Donations phone line, fulfilling donor request(s) and communicating to appropriate staff when necessary.
  • Support with the gift acknowledgment process as needed; fulfil donor requests as received for reissue of specific acknowledgments via email or paper mail.

Financial Administration

  • Process department invoices, including vendor invoices related to special events and the Break the Cycle Gala, ensuring timely and accurate submission for payment.
  • Reconcile the EVP, Chief Development Officer's monthly credit card expenses, ensuring accurate coding and documentation.
  • Support gift receiving and coding processes in partnership with Finance as needed.

Systems, Special Projects & Confidentiality

  • Maintain and organize SharePoint site structure and shared files for the Development and Communications departments.
  • Support ad hoc special projects as assigned by the VP, Development Operations.
  • Ensure confidentiality and ethical handling of donor and constituent information at all times.
  • Assist with audits, reconciliations, and end-of-year fundraising processes as needed.

Volunteer Engagement & Administration

  • Conduct introductory follow-up calls with volunteer groups and individual volunteers after successful hand-off from the Volunteer Services team, identifying opportunities to engage them further as community members, potential donors, or grant partners.
  • Assist the Development team with organizing or supporting volunteer service projects as a means of stewarding key individuals and unassigned groups, ensuring they have a meaningful experience while cultivating new relationships or advancing existing ones.
  • Office management, including monitoring, ordering, and organizing supplies and printed materials; processing invoices; renewing subscriptions; scanning and filing documents; creating and maintaining files; preparing materials for in-house mailings.
  • Provide team support for donor tours and events.
  • Other Duties as Assigned.

Meeting & Calendar Support

  • Compile agenda items and coordinate logistics for the standing Dev | Comms monthly meeting and other recurring department meetings.
  • Support calendar coordination and scheduling for the VP, Development Operations, and other department leaders as needed.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and cultivate relationships with donors, volunteers, and internal/external stakeholders
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies that drive revenue growth and support organizational priorities.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to leverage data and metrics to inform decision-making and drive continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with the ability to foster an inclusive and welcoming philanthropic community
  • Knowledge of fundraising best practices, trends, and emerging technologies in the nonprofit sector.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire, motivate, and collaborate with peer team members toward achieving ambitious fundraising goals
  • A high level of accountability, self-motivation, and ability to work collaboratively and with confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in fundraising CRM systems, donor databases, digital fundraising platforms, and MS Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, etc

Reports to: Vice President, Development Operations

Physical Demands: Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds. Requires looking at a computer screen for several hours a day. May be required to sit for long periods.
