Behavioral Health Consultant

Department: Behavioral Health Services
Location: Washington , DC

SOME (So Others Might Eat) is seeking a Behavioral Health Consultant to provide behavioral assessment, short-term case management, and treatment interventions to patients in a fast-paced Medical and Behavioral Health Services department. The ideal candidate will enjoy making patient decisions swiftly.  Everyday will be interesting and no day will be the same. This position is ideal for someone thrives under limited supervision and autonomy with the patients. This position is conveniently located near the NOMA metro station and within walking distance from Union Station. Position Description: Utilizes the Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) model to provide behavioral health assessments and brief interventions to patients referred by Medical and BHS; promotes care integration between Medical, Dental, and Behavioral Health Services. Receives referrals from primary care providers for consult and to assist in helping the patient identify barriers that interfere with health care needs. Offers support to patients to identify and meet behavioral health goals.  Provides short-term individual therapy and group counseling as needed.  

Schedule: Monday- Friday 8:00 am-4:30 pm 

Qualifications: 

Required: Master's Degree is Social Work, LGSW or LPC. 3-5 years of experience providing services in addiction treatment and mental health; experience providing services to underprivileged populations. 

Preferred: LICSW and 3-5 years of experience providing services in addiction treatment and mental health; experience providing behavioral health services in a primary care setting; SPDAT certification. Experience working with the homeless population; knowledge of and experience with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of mental health and substance abuse 
  • Experience with or the ability to learn brief interventions for behavioral health issues in primary care
  • Ability to work in fast-paced primary care environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills 
  • Ability to communicate with a large diverse audience
Expected Contributions: 
  • Behavioral Health in Primary Care: Conduct assessments and brief interventions for behavioral health conditions in primary care in accordance with Primary Care Behavioral Health (PCBH) Model.  Utilize evidence-based interventions to assist clients to create behavioral change plans. Train new medical providers on the use of the PCBH model. When appropriate, provide limited case management services to medical patients, including administrations of VI-SPDAT, and referral to outside services. Document, track, and report on BHC interventions, including pre and post measures of patient wellness whenever possible. Develop and sustain on-going program evaluations strategies for use in quality improvement and/or research publications. 
  • Mental Health Treatment Services: Assess clients for both Medical and Behavioral Health Services determine appropriateness for brief intervention, therapy, psychiatry, or Core Service Agency referral. Provide crisis intervention services for clients experiencing crisis in Medical or Behavioral Health Services. 
  • Addiction Treatment Services: Facilitate groups for addictions treatment programs. Provide addictions counseling as needed. Provide brief interventions for medical patients experiences substance abuse issues. Refer to treatment as appropriate. 
  • Outreach: Provide outreach in dinning room to clients as assigned. Attend months meetings to exchange information on integrating behavioral healthcare in primary care settings.
