SOME (So Others Might Eat) exists to help the homeless and poor of Washington, DC. With over 30 programs throughout the District of Columbia, we provide a wide spectrum of services to the most vulnerable individuals and families of our city. We strive to provide success paths toward mental and physical health, continued sobriety, job training, and employment with a living wage, affordable housing, and ultimately living independently and confidently.

Compensation: We offer our employees a competitive compensation and benefits package that reflects our organizational culture, mission, and core values. The hourly range for this position is $19.46 to $22.87 and may be commensurate with experience.

SOME (So Others Might Eat) is seeking a Lead Cook to join the team, most recently recognized for serving 900 meals every day! The Lead Cook is one of the most important positions at SOME, Inc. because serving meals is at the heart of our organization.

Position Description: The Lead Cook is responsible for preparing daily meals, including breakfast, lunch, and meals designated for delivery to various programs. This role also involves maintaining kitchen operations, overseeing food inventory, and ensuring that all meals are prepared in a timely, efficient, and sanitary manner. The Lead Cook plays a key role in ensuring that all kitchen activities run smoothly and that high standards of food quality and safety are consistently met.

Required: HS Diploma or GED; 1-3 yrs. food service or restaurant experience

Preferred: Culinary Arts Degree; 3 + yrs. institutional food service or restaurant experience; Driver's License

Required License/Certifications: Food Handler's License by the District of Columbia Department of Health

Schedule: Thursday - Monday, 6:00 am - 2:30 pm (40 hours per week) *Essential Employee*

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of kitchen operations and food preparation techniques
  • Knowledge of food safety
  • Customer service skills to interact with volunteers and coworkers
  • Flexibility with the ability to multitask despite competing priorities
  • Ability to read and understand menus and recipes
  • Able to utilize kitchen equipment and tools
  • Organized with an attention to detail
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Strong leadership skills to guide and oversee kitchen staff, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and to high standards.

Kitchen Operations Management:

  • Develop a daily menu and plan breakfast and lunch with selections that are balanced and nutritious.
  • File invoices from deliveries
  • Label meals for serving and delivery
  • Communicate with the Floor Manager to determine attendance and meals required
  • Communicate with Kitchen Aides regarding portion size for serving
  • Ensure meals are ready each day for delivery to programs
    Plan and organize meals for Central Kitchen to provide meals that meet nutrition requirements for children and the aging
  • Track and plan food budget
  • Plan the economical use of resources and meal portion size
  • Communicate with the Floor Manager to determine attendance and meals required
  • Communicate with Kitchen Aides regarding portion size for serving

Reports to: Kitchen Manager

Environmental Working Conditions: This position is primarily in a kitchen setting. Work may be performed in the kitchen and dining areas with exposure to heat, cold, steam, and fumes.
