We meet immediate needs with food, clothing, and healthcare and offer the tools one needs to live with hope, dignity, and greater independence.

SOME (So Others Might Eat) is actively seeking a part-time Career Development Contractor (Career Development Assistant) to provide assistance to our Center for Employment Training program located at 4430 Benning Road, NE in Washington, DC 20019. This position is designed to provide essential support to adult learners in their educational pursuits, contributing to their academic achievements and career progression.

Position Description: The Career Development Assistant will serve a crucial function by providing support for the Career Development class attended by our trainees. Responsibilities include aiding in classroom activities and working closely with the Professional Development Specialist to handle various administrative tasks. The preferred candidate should exhibit a strong interest in education, exceptional organizational abilities, and a dedication to assisting individuals in attaining their career objectives.

Understanding Your Industry - The primary responsibility of the Career Development Assistant encompasses facilitating various career assessments and interest profiling, guiding individuals through career path exploration, and offering mentorship on distinguishing between criminal and non-criminal records during background checks. Furthermore, aiding trainees in job search strategies and understanding industry-specific relocation processes is integral. This role is dynamic, with potential additional responsibilities.

Resume and Cover Letter - The core focus of the Career Development Assistant involves educating trainees on diverse resume formats, assisting in the incorporation of transferable skills into resumes, and elucidating the essential elements of cover letters. Providing support in composing, reviewing, and refining resumes to adhere to a standardized format is key.

Self-Marketing and Interviewing - The role of the Career Development Assistant includes coaching trainees on effective self-marketing strategies, such as thorough research on organizations, staying abreast of industry trends, and posing insightful questions during interviews. Conducting mock interviews, role-playing scenarios, and facilitating panel sessions are part of the responsibilities. Additionally, offering constructive feedback for self-improvement purposes is crucial.

Goal Settings - The Career Development Assistant is tasked with training individuals on identifying key performance indicators, establishing long-term objectives, delineating short-term and long-term career goals, and setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals. Guiding trainees on monitoring progress, making necessary adjustments, and evaluating goal achievement is an essential aspect of this role.

Portfolio - The Career Development Assistant will instruct trainees on creating a comprehensive portfolio, including designing a report cover to house essential documents like resumes, cover letters, achievements, thank-you letter, certificates, transcripts, letters of recommendation, work samples, and references.

Schedule (Time Commitment): 8 – 30 hours weekly
