Kitchen Aide

SOME (So Others Might Eat) provides material aid and comfort to our vulnerable neighbors in the District of Columbia, helping them to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through programs and services that save lives, improve lives, and help to transform the lives of individuals and families, their communities, and the systems and structures that affect them. Our more than 30 programs throughout the district provide comprehensive services that lead to mental and physical health, continued sobriety, job training, living-wage employment, and affordable housing. We meet immediate needs with food, clothing, and healthcare and offer the tools one needs to live with hope, dignity, and greater independence.

SOME (So Others Might Eat) is currently seeking a Kitchen Aide to join our Senior Services department at our Karin House location.

Position Description: Responsible for the daily operations of serving the noon-day lunch to program participants and assisting with program activities as needed.

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 10:00 am - 2:00 pm (20 hours per week)

Qualifications:

Required: High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.

Preferred: 1+ year related work experience, Experience working with senior population desired.

Required License/Certification: Food Handlers License, CPR/First Aid Certificate

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of food handling, temperature, and sanitation standards required
  • Ability to follow confidentiality protocols
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, Good communication, and customer service services skills are required.
  • Good customer service and people skills are required, Ability to be flexible and a team player. Demonstrated cultural competence and responsiveness. Sincere interest in the mission and vision of the organization.

Expected Contributions:

  • Organize supplies and clean equipment required to serve meals
  • Assist with setting up and serving of a lunch meal
  • Greet the program participants as they arrive
  • Assist with clean up after lunch and activities as needed, Assist with implementation of program objectives.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality in all matters, including but not limited to clients, personnel budgets, contracts, Board of Directors,
  • Attend and assist Program Support Specialist or assigned staff with or while on outings for senior trips
  • Assist with serving food during catered events hosted onsite.
  • Report any incidents to Senior Services Dining Site Coordinator.

Physical Demands: Employee may set up and break down folding tables and chairs for meal service. Must be able to lift and move program equipment, trash, files, or boxes weighing up to 20 pounds. May be required to sit for long periods of time.
