Building Engineer

SOME (So Others Might Eat) provides material aid and comfort to our vulnerable neighbors in the District of Columbia, helping them to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through programs and services that save lives, improve lives, and help to transform the lives of individuals and families, their communities, and the systems and structures that affect them. We meet immediate needs with food, clothing, and healthcare and offer the tools one needs to live with hope, dignity, and greater independence.

SOME (So Others Might Eat) is currently seeking a full-time Building Engineer to join our Facilities Management team.

Position Description: The Building Engineer is responsible for performing facilities management activities associated with SOME buildings, residential and commercial spaces, and their grounds. The Building Engineer applies professional concepts and methods to solve Facilities Management problems of varying complexity. The Building Engineer will also respond to work orders related to plumbing, electrical, mechanical, or general maintenance and repair.

Schedule: Monday - Friday 9:00am - 5:30pm (40 hours per week)

Required: High School Diploma/GED; 5-7 years of Facilities Management experience in commercial and/or residential buildings

Required License/Certification: CFC Universal Certification; Driver's License

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of electrical issues, HVAC repair, service and preventive maintenance, fire systems, plumbing, and general maintenance and repair
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance related to general maintenance and repair
  • Ability to work independently or as a team player in a dynamic environment
  • Professional communication skills to communicate verbally and in writing
  • Customer Service skills
  • Ability to prioritize work tasks with good time management skills
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Organized with attention to detail
  • Familiar with Computerized Maintenance and Management Systems (CMMS)
  • Basic Math skills
  • Ability to use common power tools, hand tools, and maintenance equipment
  • Smartphone skills

Expected Contributions:

Facility Operations: Perform corrective maintenance tasks and conduct inspections to determine the extent of services required. Perform preventive maintenance tasks such as changing HVAC filters, replacing plumbing seals, etc. Provide timely turnover of apartments: repainting, repairs, floor replacement, etc. Review and complete work orders via the work order system. Maintain building lighting systems, which may include repairing or replacing the lighting system. Ensure all MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing), Fire Systems (sprinklers, extinguishers, emergency and exit lights, smoke detectors), and Critical Systems (generators) are operating safely and efficiently.

Project Management: Provide oversight and management of outsourced contractors for services such as plumbing, HVAC, fire systems, etc. Review maintenance management system to schedule, track, and complete work projects. Provide weekly reports to department heads on facility conditions, assessments, project work, and specific goals. Coordinate on-site set-up, breakdown, and special projects. Travel to multiple project sites, daily, to provide services.

Reports to: Chief Building Engineer

Physical Demands: Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. This position may be active and requires standing, walking, bending, lifting, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing. Work may be performed outside on facility grounds in heat or cold.

Position Designation: This position is designated as Safety Sensitive. You may be subject to drug testing prior to or during your employment with SOME. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.
